Project “SOfiaGREEN” was initiated by the Mayor of Sofia and the Sofia Development Association. The team started work in the fall of 2016 with the main objective of coordinating and streamlining all of Sofia Municipality’s policies related to sustainable development. The aim is to put forward a successful bid for Sofia in the European Green Capital* contest, organised by the European Commission, and improve the quality of life for the citizens.
At this stage, the team is gathering & sorting information, conducting analysis across a variety of sustainability indicators, in order to propose short-term and long-term measures to improve the performance of the city and the quality of life. Parallel to this activity, a number of pilot projects are run in relation to air quality, mobility and waste management, which are identified as top-priority for Sofia’s bid to become European Green Capital.
*The European Green Capital Award (EGCA) is an initiative of the European Commission, which seeks to reward cities that make effort to improve the urban environment and move towards healthier and sustainable living areas. Over 75% of the population in Europe now lives in urban areas, which poses great challenged for city authorities. Past winners of the EGCA include Stockholm, Hamburg, Copenhagen and Ljubljana.
